Bitter Sweet

As projected the Democrats took control of the house by what looks like a large margin. The senate has become much more competitive than I initially expected and will probably play out over a few days or even weeks. However, by no means is this a sign that this country is becoming more progressive. Seven out of the eight ballot initiatives that would “ban” the extension of marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples have passed. It seems that Arizona may be the only state to vote no on this but that is still undecided. I’m very happy Democrats have regained some control in this nation but how happy should progressive Americans be when the Democrats are becoming indistinguishable from Republicans on social issues? How hopeful can gay and lesbian Americans be when for another election year, the vast majority of our fellow citizens vote against our civil liberty and the freedom to build families and protect their families, just as they do? My answer: Not very happy at all.
