TIGLFF

Last night marked the beginning of the 17th annual Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festal (TIGLFF). The opening film, Reinas (Queens), was a cute and uplifting comedy about the beginning of gay marriage in Spain and the family drama that comes along with it. Last night during the movie and the preceding speeches I was reminded of the struggle that all of us who identity ourselves as GLBT continue to face in this country. I was also reminded of the power we have when we speak and act as a collective. As a public health researcher I am painfully aware of the health consequences and the price many of us pay because of our exclusion and relegated status in this country. It is nice to hear politicians, like Tampa’s mayor Pam Iorio and future congress person Kathy Castor, who have the moral insight and the bravery to speak out against this systematic exclusion. This experience also brought to mind the countless other politicians who cowardly or ignorantly remain silent or endorse this bigotry (this includes you Hilary Clinton!). I am tired of and done with supporting the political careers of these false progressives. There is nothing I would like to see more than a female Democrat elected as the president of the United States but I will not compromise my own representation in this democracy to see this happen and neither should anyone else who believes in equality. With that said, I’d like to take this moment and make a statement to Hilary Clinton and others like her.

You can take “civil unions” and any other separate and unequal scraps that you can stomach to dish out to us deviants and shove them up your pandering, anti-progressive, warmongering assholes. If I wanted to vote for Republican policies, I’d vote for a Republican.
